Walton Firs Celebration Day

On Saturday 11^th June, The Lord-Lieutenant, along with Deputy Lieutenant, Sally Varah MBE, visited Walton Firs in Cobham to present them with their Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. 

Walton Firs Activity Centre, has been an adventure area for youngsters since the 1940s and their outstanding achievements in educational development were recognised with the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Originally owned by the Scouting movement as a place where Cubs and Scouts could take their outdoor badges, camp, and learn teamwork and survival skills, its 36 acres of land were put up for sale in 2008.

With the dedicated help of a group of former scouts from 2nd Hersham dating back to the 60s, Elmbridge Council and many private donors, the Walton Firs Foundation was formed to save the site from development and ensure its survival for young people.

After the presentation, The Lord-Lieutenant was given a tour of the facilities and outdoor activities.

The special occasion also afforded an opportunity to open the latest addition to the ever expanding site. Dick’s Barn, a new building dedicated to much-missed supporters Richard Holley and Richard Shortman. In addition, a tree was planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy planting initiative and a time capsule buried for 50 years by two 18 year olds who promised to unearth it in 2072!
