Royal British Legion Surrey Poppy Launch
On Friday 28th October, the 2022 Surrey Poppy Launch took place in All Saint’s Church, the former Guard’s Chapel, at the Army Training Centre, Alexander Barracks, in Pirbright.
Lt Col. Shamus Kelly OBE RRF, Commanding Officer Headquarter Regiment ATC welcomed the Lord Lieutenant and opened the launch. Brigadier Paul Evans OBE DL, President of the RBL Surrey, made introductory remarks which included the great need of finance to support those badly injured in combat. Reverend Roland Olliff led the prayers prior to Brigadier Evans making the Exhortation. One minute’s silence preceded his speaking the Kohima Epitaph. Dame Penelope Keith DBE DL reflected on Poppy Day and its history before reading John McCrae’s famous poem “In Flanders Fields”.
In the past year an outstanding £1.1m was raised by the RBL in Surrey, Peter Wakeham, RBL Community Fundraiser for East Surrey, thanked those who collected street donations in all weathers and everybody who supported the RBL.
The Lord Lieutenant then handed out the first poppies in Surrey before thanking the Commanding Officer, and the RBL for their dedicated work on behalf of all those who need their support.
