D-Day Celebrations across Surrey

Following on from the National D-Day 80 celebrations in Portsmouth on the 5th June, attended by the Lord-Lieutenant, there were a variety of events across Surrey attended Deputy Lieutenants. Here are just a few.

Brigadier Paul Evans OBE DL attended the Beacon lighting at Farnham

“I had the privilege of representing the Lord Lieutenant at the Farnham Beacon Lighting event on D Day 80. It was an extremely well planned and very well organised event, strongly supported by the residents who were entertained, before the lighting of the beacon, by the Farnham Brass Band and two very good singers, singing old time favourites. What was striking was the large number of children and young people who attended and took part in the excellent parade as a Guard of Honour. Well done Farnham Town Council.”

Major General Tim Sulivan CB CBE DL attended the beacon lighting in Normandy at Manor Fruit Farm with music from Surrey Police Band.

Brigadier Roger Hood QVRM TD DL attended Capel Village beacon lighting with around 80 attendees with residents’ recollections as children in the village. Many Canadian troops occupied and trained in the Surrey woods, houses and farms nearby from 1943 to 1944 when then left for Normandy. Now well into their 90s, they remembered it very well.
