Coram Life Education delivers in Surrey

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the mental health and wellbeing of pupils and their teachers at a number of primary schools in Woking Borough has been supported by a special programme developed by national charity, Coram Life Education (CLE). When schools closed in late March 2020, CLE transformed the learning environment so that its visiting educators could deliver sessions safely when children returned in September. Through the 2020 autumn term, pupils have been excited to engage with the CLE’s interactive, creative methods and resources that stimulate their curiosity and imagination.

CLE is the UK’s leading provider of relationships, health, wellbeing, and drugs education to primary school children – all delivered under the strapline ‘Helping Children Make Healthy Choices’. As well as teaching students in school classrooms, the trained educators can also communicate via virtual programmes called SCARF Live Online. These consist of shorter, interactive online sessions – with an emphasis on children’s emotional wellbeing and resilience – that meet new national requirements to teach relationships and health education. In addition, there is a ‘Back to school with SCARF’ toolkit that teachers can access, as part of a school’s ‘recovery curriculum’ to help children stay happy, healthy and safe during the crisis and on their return to school. Currently, CLE is offering primary schools a free 6-week trial of these online resources.

Aware of the numbers of pupils needing to self-isolate, CLE has also developed SCARF at Home for parents. This consists of online family-friendly activities that children can complete at home. The aim is to encourage them to think and reflect, and to focus on positive themes that are safe for parents to discuss with their child, and so promote discussion.
