Emergency Services Day (999 Day) 9th September

On Emergency Services Day, Peter Lee DL also visited Salfords Custody Suite, an impressive purpose-built facility just outside Redhill. The purpose of a custody suite is to process and detain (for up to 24 hours) those who have been arrested. It is not a Police Station but it plays a vital role in the criminal justice system. Peter was greeted by DI Jackie Brock and Sgt Mark Simpson who gave him a tour of this impressive, purpose-built facility. Those being taken into custody are treated professionally and with respect, courtesy and care. There is even an on-site medic to deal with the many medical issues of those being processed such as alcoholism, drugs and mental health issues. Those in custody are checked every 30 minutes during their stay. The previous day, the team had processed 18 people. It was a quieter day on 9th September but on average they process 10 people (including young offenders) each day. They lost one of their own to Covid but undeterred they continue to perform this vital role professionally and efficiently. We should not take them for granted.
