The Lord-Lieutenant and members of the Surrey Lieutenancy were saddened to learn of the death of Henry Rice, R.N.

Henry, a Cranleigh resident, saw active service in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and took part in the Normandy landings on D-Day.  One of the last survivors of that War, Henry celebrated his 100th birthday in February this year.

He devoted much time in his later years to supporting the Royal British Legion.  He was often seen in television programmes and at National Commemorations of the Second World War, but was equally happy to spend time at local events here in Surrey, talking about his many wartime memories and raising funds for the Royal British Legion.  A remarkable man from an outstanding generation – he will be sadly missed.

Picture shows Henry Rice at a Royal British Legion event, “Witness – an Evening of Reflection and Remembrance” held in Cranleigh in June 2026.
