Remembrance across Surrey
Starting on Friday 8th November with the Schools Service in Farnham, organised by Farnham Town Council in conjunction with Farnham Schools’ Confederation, a partnership of 18 schools in the Farnham area ranging from Infant to Secondary and Special Educational Needs, paraded up to the war memorial at Gostrey Meadow for the outdoor service. Before the two-minute silence, Deputy Lieutenant, Perdita Hunt OBE read Laurence Binyon’s poem ‘For the Fallen’, after the Kohima Epitaph, pupils read poems written for the commemoration, and then laid wreaths and planted crosses.
On Sunday 10th, various Remembrance services were held throughout Surrey including The Lord-Lieutenant attending the RAF service at Runnymede.
Deputy Lieutenants represented the Lieutenancy at services held across the County, with the Vice Lord-Lieutenant Mary Creswell attending the service at Farnham.
The County Service at Guildford Cathedral was attended by Commodore Andrew Canale MVO DL and Lord-Lieutenants Cadets. Jim Babbington OBE DL attended the wreath laying at Shamley Green.
Rob Douglas CBE DL attended the service and wreath laying at Churt.
Robert Napier CBE DL attended at Cranleigh. After the Parish Church service organised by the Chairman of the Parish Council, Cllr Marc Scully and his committee, and supported by the CCF and staff of Cranleigh School, there was a parade up the High Street to the War memorial, led by two pupil pipers. Following the two minutes silence and a further service, wreaths were laid by the Deputy Lieutenant and uniform organisations, which involved a large number of children, and other volunteer groups. Concluding with a salute and March Past at Cranleigh Sports and Social club.
Nick Wood-Dow DL attended Spelthorne at the War Memorial in Market Square, Staines, which was attended by around 3000 people.
Major General Tim Sulivan CB CBE DL attended the American Military Service at Brookwood Cemetery
Armistice Day
On Armistice Day, Mary Zoeller DL, The High Sheriff, The Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, and the MP for Epsom & Ewell, Helen Maguire, led from the Town Hall to the Clock Tower where they were met by veterans and a large number of members of the public. The Mayor’s Chaplain Reverend Rosemary Donovan started with prayers before the Act of Remembrance was read out, The Last Post was played and then the Town Minute Silence was observed before the laying of wreaths.
