Village turns out for Award of Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Appreciation to Shackleford Village shop proprietor Nick Mitchell
The Vice Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Robert Fraser presented Nick Mitchell with a Certificate of Appreciation in front of a large gathering of villagers, friends and customers to recognise all Nick has done for Shackleford over more than 15 years.
With the help of a fantastic band of volunteers and others he has made the village shop into an invaluable asset to the villagers and visitors.
But that is not all by a long chalk. He made it his business to keep in touch with many of the most vulnerable villagers, regularly visiting them and providing practical help.
Spilling out of the shop onto the village green because of the numbers who had turned out to support Nick, fellow villagers were quick to pay tribute to his cheerfulness, enthusiasm and involvement in so many village events, describing him as a “lynch-pin” of the village.
He has been a shining example of what volunteers do, stepping up to organise the Harvest Supper and Christmas lunches for the village, helping organise the Village Fete, Jubilee and Coronation lunches, the village tennis tournament, volunteering at the local food bank as well as taking on responsibility for part of the Remembrance Day commemoration each year.
