‘Watertight’ Ceremony
On Tuesday 16th April, Deputy Lieutenant, Dr Julie Llewellyn attended a ‘Watertight’ ceremony for Silverwood, a new Northwest Surrey mental health inpatient unit on St. Peter’s Hospital campus in Chertsey.
Silverwood is being built on the site of the former Abraham Cowley Unit which closed in Spring 2022. ‘Watertight’, a popular milestone used in the construction industry, marks the point in the build process where the structure is sheltered from the weather. The building is due to open in the Autumn of 2024.
Silverwood will support people across Surrey and North-East Hampshire who require an inpatient mental health related stay. Whilst the new building is on the Ashford and St Peters Hospital site, the build is entirely by and for Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, rather than being part of Ashford and St Peters Hospital.
Silverwood will provide:
Four brand new wards (64 beds in total) all with single ensuite bedrooms to provide greater privacy and dignity for people using the services.
Two lounges on each ward allowing people more choice and flexibility.
Greater access to garden space; each ward will have a dedicated garden and there will be a woodland area for supervised walks.
A variety of dedicated spaces which will be tailored to the clinical needs of the ward, including activity, therapy, and sensory-type calm rooms.
A dedicated therapies area with access to a garden area for sports activities.
A music room, air-conditioned gym, art room and dedicated spirituality room.
Improved on-ward entertainment systems and better ways to stay connected to families and friends.
The building is due to open in the Autumn of 2024.
