The Surrey Hills was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 60 years ago, on 8th May 1958

The Surrey Hills was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) 60 years ago, on 8th May 1958, and celebrated with a reception, sponsored by the Kier Group, in the State Rooms at Speaker’s House, House of Commons. Distinguished guests included Lord Gardiner of Kimble, Minister for Rural Affairs; Michael More-Molyneux, the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey; and Peter Martin, Chairman of Surrey County Council. It was also good to see so many of those who volunteer with the Surrey Hills Society present on the evening. With its spectacular views, beautiful villages and extensive woodlands, the Surrey Hills AONB stretches across a quarter of the county and includes the chalk slopes of the North Downs, from Farnham in the west to Oxted in the east, while extending south to the deeply wooded Greensand Hills which rise in Haslemere. www.surreyhills.org/celebrating-60-years/
