Dorking Museum & Heritage Centre receives Queen’s Award

Volunteers from the Dorking Museum & Heritage Centre have received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2021. Run by the community for the community, Dorking Museum is a vibrant hub that celebrates the history of the town and villages through its interactive permanent exhibition and regular temporary exhibitions. Curators collect and care for the town’s oral, visual, written and material heritage and the archive provides a service to a variety of users. Outreach teams work with schools, youth and community groups to involve all sections of society. 

The Museum’s volunteers offer gallery talks, tours of the South Street Caves, and guided walks in Dorking, at Betchworth Castle and on the Deepdene Trail. Family activities, resources for reminiscence, loan boxes for schools, and training opportunities are also available. The Museum’s Cockerel Press publishes high-quality locally-based research, and through its extensive website the Museum forges links with individuals and organisations across the world. This Award is the equivalent of the MBE for volunteering.
