Royal Visit to The Lighthouse from the Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets’ perspective

Explorer Scout Daniel Booker

On the 18th December 2024, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to support the Lord -Lieutenant in receiving HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh at The Lighthouse in Woking. It was an honour to meet The Duchess who was very friendly and had a calming presence felt by everyone in the room. The Lighthouse is an amazing hub where those in need can access essential services both traditional, such as the foodbank, and more creative, such as the second-hand clothes section, where those who can’t afford to buy a suit for a job interview can borrow one or purchase one for much more affordable prices. It was a fabulous experience to feel the community spirit and see the joy that the tireless dedication of the volunteers there put on the faces of 8,000 vulnerable people a year.

It was an honour to be able to help the Lord- Lieutenant in welcoming HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh to The Lighthouse in Woking.  It was lovely to see what The Lighthouse had to offer for vulnerable people such as food and hygiene banks, as well as a second-hand clothes section. it was also incredible to see how invested The Duchess in this charity we watched (and helped) her serve many meals to the people that were there.  We also got to see her interaction with a mother and child group. Before she departed, The Duchess was presented with a soup jar in a cosy from the Cosy Cafe, this was her idea a year prior, and was amazing to see that the charity had made it happen!
