Mid Surrey Community Fridges receives Queen’s Award

Volunteers from Mid Surrey Community Fridges have received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2021. Their dedicated work helps to reduce food waste by collecting food that otherwise would be sent to landfill, and targeting it to those who need it most. They mobilise communities to help themselves, redistributing surplus food, bringing people together and reducing social isolation.  Pre-Covid, the food was delivered to Community Fridge sites where anyone could access it. Throughout the pandemic, volunteers received large amounts of fresh and ambient food and prioritised those most in need through referrals. “Take what you need, Give what you can!” is their mantra. This Award is the equivalent of the MBE for volunteering.
